The project Thomas Plasschaert in Naples, born from the unity of purpose between the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Naples and Pompeii and the gallery AICA | Andrea Ingenito Contemporary Art, curated by Marco De Gemmis and Andrea Ingenito, realized with the collaboration of the Institut Français Le Grenoble in Naples and the contribution in the set up at the Archaeological Museum of LANDE Ltd. Environmental Engineering Archaeology Restoration, includes the exhibitions Arcadia and Pan is dead, which are closely related.
One of the results of this collaboration is the catalogue, published by AICA | Andrea Ingenito Contemporary Art, including some white pages which during the opening will be equipped by the artist with signed images of the installation at the Archeological Museum.
Arcadia, organized by the Educational Service of the Superintendence, is displayed at the Archaeological Museum as part of the exhibition project dedicated to contemporary artists whose research is significantly related to the Ancient.
Core of the of the exhibition is an installation of small enameled ceramics on a “carpet” of terracotta bricks, which creates an unusual landscape with figures and it combines with small wall paintings.
Arcadia, literary and artistic region of the Peloponnese, is the imaginary scenery in which Thomas Plasschaert sets his works, rural and orgiastic scenes, human and animal sacrifices, in which we find Pan, Satyrs and Marsyas with his torture.
Pan is dead, exhibited at the AICA gallery, presents the ideal completion of Arcadia and provides a broaden insight of the artistic research of Plasschaert.
Here the paintings, the sculptures in terracotta and clay, reproduced in life-size on the body of the models of the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples Maria Letizia Esposito and Emanuela Futia (designed specifically for the gallery), are exhibited for the first time in Italy and highlight a reworking of the mythology through the contemporary imaginary.
