Davide Maria Coltro (Verona, 1967), artist and researcher, lives and works between Milan and Lake Maggiore. For several decades, he has explored the expressive potential of the screen with an analytical and process-oriented approach. His projects transform the creation, dissemination, and experience of art. The result of his studies, which began in the late 1990s, is an unprecedented relational platform that the artist uses to create and distribute his electronic painting. His research is rooted in a dialogue with art history and the traditional genres of painting. Coltro describes these works as “painting beyond matter,” which exist on a technological canvas or Media Frame, restoring the image to an experience of time and space—a kind of bilocation in which the artist acts on the work without being physically present.Coltro consistently refers to the “painting” (quadro) as a fundamental object in the evolution of art history, and his reinterpretation reflects a contemporary historical-cultural vision that unleashes the evocative power of the traditional painting while advancing its evolution. His works have been exhibited in numerous national and international institutions, including: MART in Rovereto, Galleria di Trento, GAM Achille Forti in Verona, SPSI Art Museum in Shanghai, ZKM in Karlsruhe, Italian Cultural Institute in San Francisco, GASC Villa Clerici in Milan, Paolo VI Collection in Brescia, Museo dei Bronzi Dorati in Pergola, Fondazione Lercaro in Bologna, MAGA Museum in Gallarate, Calderara Foundation in Ameno, MAR in Ravenna, Museo del Paesaggio in Verbania, and Museo Tornielli in Ameno on Lake Orta. In 2011, he was featured in the Italian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale. In 2023, the VAF Foundation / Stiftung dedicated a monograph to his complete works.
