GIACOMO RIZZO. PASSAGGI
I luoghi della pelle
Twelve large and medium-sized sculptures are part of the solo exhibition at the AICA Gallery | Andrea Ingenito Contemporary Art in Milan devoted to Giacomo Rizzo.
This exhibition, curated by Serena Ribaudo, shows a core of works made of different material: such as resin, plaster, aluminum, Plexiglas, wax and silicon that create a representative panorama of the last production of the artist from Palermo.
Giacomo Rizzo, born in 1977, develop for years an aesthetic and linguistic research in a direct relation with his motherland, Sicily, and with the architecture: in particular is from nature that he takes strong suggestions and ideas.
Giacomo Rizzo is a sculptur that loves working on the “archeology of nature”, he realizes casts of trees trunks, pieces of land, lawn portions, pieces of the cliff or cliffs whose impression is taken by doing what Rizzo defines a ” strappo ” that is the artist’s method.
Rizzo works on the surface of the natural elements trying to figure out, through the skin, the inner essence.
Very impressive is the monumental sculpture Breath (350 × 210 cm) a “tear” in resin from Mount Pellegrino, the hill so dear to the Palermo people, on which stands the shrine dedicated to Santa Rosalia, famous place of pilgrimage and devotion.
The rough surface of the mountain lives – well treaded – in the rooms of the Milan gallery bringing the symbolic value of a sacred place into human scale.
This work has recently become part of the permanent collection of Rice, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Sicily.
in this work, the Sacred is reported Human.
In Rizzo work also happens the opposite, the Human is elevated to the Spiritual: “Giacomo Rizzo – Serena Ribaudo writes in his essay in the catalog of the show – departs from res terrena to sublimate it into an imago animae through the” tearing”.
Rizzo – continues Serena Ribaudo – has dedicated the last years of his research to the operation of the artistic cast of nature: […] especially mountains “sacred.” Mountains known as “humanity fathers”, fathers mountains as a spirituality buried but not forgotten”.
But also bark, plowed fields, river’s shores – as in the works on display Speculum Coeli (aluminum and resin, 140 × 86 cm), Steps (resin, wax, wood, Plexiglas, plaster, 160 × 80 cm), Pelasgi (silicone, 200 × 90 cm) – works where Rizzo gives the essence of a place.
