Omaggio a Schifano
AICA | Andrea Ingenito Contemporary Art is pleased to present Saturday, March 2 at 6.00 PM the exhibition Omaggio a Schifano, curated by Andrea Ingenito.
There are about thirty works on display, which reconstruct the main stages of the artistic research of Mario Schifano: from the Monochrome of the early sixties in which the resetting of the pictorial values sanctions the detachment from the Informal ideas and the analogy of the painting with the movie screen, to the Untiled paintings of the Nineties, in which enamel and sand coexist with elegant balance.
There are also canvases from the Signals series represented by the mark Esso that invades the canvas with his strong Pop charge while not moving away from a free application of color and poetic.
In the exhibition there are plenty of landscapes paintings and iconic painting such as L’albero della Vita (1974) alongside of little-known works to the general public such as the rare A volo d’uccello (1963) and the unusual Fuori Uso ’95 (1995).
To confirm the role of the great experimenter Schifano: the works on display are made with various materials and techniques: the enamels, vinyl synthetic glues, Polaroid photos, lithography, mixed media on paper, often coming from advertising sings.
For the vernissage Massimo Sgroi – author of the text published in the catalog – will make a critical reading of the works on display.
Starting from the unique characteristics of Italian Pop Art – in which the concept of “popular” is profoundly different from that of the US – Sgroi will comment the works on display, and speaks about the Schifano artistic career, its evolution, its relationship with the images and its essential topicality.
